Civic Type R wheel specs reference car: Rallye Red Honda Civic Type R FK8 on its factory 20-inch black alloy wheels

Civic Type R wheel specs changed more between generations than most owners expect. Every Type R uses a 64.1 mm center bore, but the bolt pattern switched from 5x114.3 to 5x120 with the FK2 in 2015, and factory wheels grew from 15x6 on the EK9 to 19x9.5 ET60 on today's FL5.

This guide puts the factory Civic Type R wheel specs for all seven chassis codes in one table: bolt pattern, center bore, lug thread, wheel size, offset and tire size. It then shows which wheels cross over between generations and what changes when you fit a wider aftermarket wheel. For the general checks that apply to any car, see our forged wheel fitment verification checklist.

Civic Type R Wheel Specs by Generation: The Full Table

The Type R bolt pattern depends on the chassis: EK9, EP3, FD2 and FN2 use 5x114.3 with M12x1.5 hardware, while the FK2, FK8 and FL5 use 5x120 with M14x1.5 hardware. All share a 64.1 mm bore. Factory offsets run from ET45 on the EP3 to ET60 on every Type R since the FD2, except the European FN2 at ET55.

*Overall tire diameter calculated by ANKUSI from the nominal tire size (rim diameter plus two sidewalls). **Published EK9 offsets differ: genuine wheels sold as JDM take-offs are listed at ET50, while several fitment guides list ET45. Measure your own wheel if you need the exact figure.

Tire sizes in these Civic Type R wheel specs for the FD2, FN2 and FK2 match Honda's launch specifications as summarized in the Civic Type R history on Wikipedia. The FK8 and FL5 sizes match Honda's own US feature guides for the 2021 Civic Type R and the 2026 Civic Type R.

The 5x114.3 Era: EK9, EP3, FD2 and FN2

On the early cars, the Civic Type R wheel specs at the hub never changed. The first four generations share one layout: 5x114.3, a 64.1 mm bore and M12x1.5 studs. That makes wheel swaps between them simple, as long as offset and brake clearance work.

A bolt pattern, or PCD, is the diameter of the circle through the stud centers, so 5x114.3 means five studs on a 114.3 mm circle.

The EK9 (1997–2000) was the first Civic Type R and the only one on 15-inch wheels.

The EK9 above sits on the small 15-inch five-spoke wheels it was built with. It was sold new only in Japan, so most surviving cars are imports. Ordinary EK-chassis Civics used a 4x100 pattern, which means a wheel listed as "Civic EK" is not automatically an EK9 wheel.

The EP3 (2001–2005) moved the Type R up to 17x7 ET45 wheels on the same 5x114.3 hub.

The EP3 shown above jumped two inches in diameter to 17x7 ET45 with a 205/45R17 tire. UK specialists commonly quote 17x8 at ET35 to ET45 as the upgrade window that fits without arch work.

An FD2 sedan on track. The 8th-generation cars were the last Type R models on 5x114.3.

The 8th generation split into two different cars. The Japanese FD2 sedan in the photo runs 18x7.5 ET60 from the factory, while the European FN2 hatch uses 18x7.5 ET55. Both share the 225/40R18 tire. Our FD2 Civic Type R sedan fitment page carries the full spec sheet, and the 5x114.3 wheel size page groups every design we machine in that pattern.

For these cars, an OEM-look upgrade is often the goal. Our gloss black 10-spoke forged wheel with a Honda center cap can be cut to 5x114.3 with a 64.1 mm bore and an offset in the ET45 to ET60 window these chassis run.

The 5x120 Era: FK2, FK8 and FL5

Since the FK2, the Civic Type R wheel specs at the hub have stayed fixed: every car uses 5x120 with M14x1.5 studs and the same 64.1 mm bore. Honda also kept ET60 on all three cars. That shared hub is why FK8 and FL5 owners can swap wheels, and why 5x114.3 wheels from older Type Rs no longer bolt on.

The FK8 factory wheel: 20x8.5 ET60 on a 245/30 ZR20 tire, clearing a 4-piston front caliper.

The FK8 wheel size of 20x8.5 is visible here, with the 245/30 ZR20 size on the sidewall. The FK8 was the first Type R sold in the US, and its 20-inch wheel is the largest of any generation. Those low 30-series sidewalls are also why so many FK8 owners downsize to 18 inches.

Civic Type R wheel specs on the FL5: factory 19-inch matte black wheel with Michelin tire and red Brembo caliper
The FL5 dropped to 19 inches but grew to 9.5 inches wide, carrying a 265/30 ZR19 tire.

The FL5 wheel size went the other way: one inch smaller, one inch wider. These Civic Type R wheel specs suit a car that is wider at the fenders.

Its 19x9.5 ET60 wheel and 265/30R19 tire put more rubber on the road than the FK8 did. The full spec sheet is on our FL5 Civic Type R fitment page, and all 5x120 designs are on the 5x120 wheel size page.

Which Civic Type R Wheels Cross Over Between Generations?

Type R wheels only cross over when the Civic Type R wheel specs at the hub match, which means inside the same bolt pattern group. FK2, FK8 and FL5 wheels interchange with each other, and EK9, EP3, FD2 and FN2 wheels interchange with each other, subject to brake and fender clearance. Nothing crosses between the two groups without adapters.

  • FK8 wheels on an FL5: same 5x120, 64.1 mm bore and ET60, so they bolt on. The narrower 8.5-inch wheel simply sits further inside the FL5's wider fenders.
  • FL5 wheels on an FK8: same hub data. The extra inch of width moves the outer lip about 12.7 mm closer to the fender, so check clearance on a lowered car.
  • FD2 or EP3 wheels on an FK8 or FL5: no. The bolt pattern is wrong, and lug holes sized for M12 hardware do not suit M14 studs.

Factory Honda lug nuts use a ball (spherical) seat. Most aftermarket wheels use a 60-degree conical seat, so new wheels usually need new lug nuts. Hub rings are only needed when a wheel's bore is larger than 64.1 mm, as our hub-centric vs lug-centric guide explains.

What Changes When You Go Wider: FK8 Offset Math

Going from the factory 20x8.5 ET60 to the popular 18x9.5 ET45 pushes the outer lip about 28 mm toward the fender, while the inner barrel barely moves.

That is why a wider, lower-offset wheel fills the arch without hitting the strut. The table uses the FK8 factory wheel as the baseline. FK2 owners get the same numbers, because the FK2 also left the factory on 8.5-inch ET60 wheels.

WheelWidth changeOffset changeOuter lip vs stockInner barrel vs stock
20x8.5 ET60 (FK8 stock)0 mm0 mm0 mm0 mm
19x9.5 ET60 (FL5 stock)+25.4 mm0 mm12.7 mm out12.7 mm in
18x9.5 ET45+25.4 mm−15 mm27.7 mm out2.3 mm out
18x9.5 ET38+25.4 mm−22 mm34.7 mm out9.3 mm out
18x10 ET40+38.1 mm−20 mm39.1 mm out0.9 mm out

Outer lip movement equals half the width change plus the offset reduction. You can check any other combination with our offset, backspacing and tire diameter calculator.

When owners leave the factory Civic Type R wheel specs behind, an 18x9.5 ET45 wheel with a 265/35R18 tire is the setup most often recommended for FK8 and FL5 street use. By our calculation that tire is 643 mm tall, about 1.9% shorter than the FK8's 245/30R20 and almost identical to the FL5's 265/30R19.

How We Machine a Forged Wheel for a Civic Type R

Before we cut a Type R wheel, we confirm four details that the Civic Type R wheel specs table cannot tell us. Fitment problems usually come from one of them being assumed instead of checked.

  1. Chassis code, not just model year. A "2017 Type R" can be an FK2 in Europe or an FK8 in the US, and the chassis decides everything else.
  2. Front caliper. The 5x120 cars run 4-piston Brembo front calipers. Spoke shape, not only offset, decides whether a wheel clears them.
  3. Lug seat and thread. We machine the seat to suit the M12x1.5 or M14x1.5 hardware you will run, so the nut contacts the full seat.
  4. Center bore. We cut the bore to 64.1 mm, so the wheel centers on the hub without a ring.

Load rating matters too. A front-heavy hot hatch puts real load through each front wheel under braking, which our wheel load rating guide explains.

Forged Wheel Options for 5x120 Type R Builds

A forged wheel for a 5x120 Type R has to match the hub data above and clear the front Brembo calipers. Every design below is cut to order to the Civic Type R wheel specs of your chassis: 5x120 or 5x114.3, a 64.1 mm bore and your chosen offset.

For drag builds, the mirror polished 6-spoke beadlock wheel clamps the tire bead for hard launches. For street and circuit use, the bright gray 6-spoke deep-lip wheel and the blue 10-spoke forged wheel suit the FK8 and FL5. Browse every design we list for the car on the Civic Type R forged wheels page, or see the Honda Civic fitment overview for non-Type R trims.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Civic Type R bolt pattern?

It depends on the generation. The EK9, EP3, FD2 and FN2 use 5x114.3, and the FK2, FK8 and FL5 use 5x120. Every Civic Type R uses a 64.1 mm center bore.

Do FK8 wheels fit an FL5 Civic Type R?

Yes. Both use 5x120, a 64.1 mm bore, M14x1.5 studs and an ET60 factory offset. The FK8 wheel is 20x8.5 and the FL5 wheel is 19x9.5, so the FK8 wheel simply sits further inside the FL5's wider fenders.

What lug nut thread does the Civic Type R use?

The 5x114.3 cars (EK9, EP3, FD2 and FN2) use M12x1.5, and the 5x120 cars (FK2, FK8 and FL5) use M14x1.5. Factory Honda nuts have a ball seat, while most aftermarket wheels need conical-seat nuts.

What is the factory Civic Type R offset?

ET60 on the FD2, FK2, FK8 and FL5, ET55 on the European FN2 and ET45 on the EP3. Published figures for the EK9 differ between ET45 and ET50.

What is the most popular aftermarket wheel size for the FK8 and FL5?

18x9.5 ET45 with a 265/35R18 tire is the most commonly recommended street size. Compared with the FK8's stock 20x8.5 ET60 wheel, it moves the outer lip about 28 mm outward and leaves the inner barrel almost where it was.

Can EP3 or FD2 wheels fit an FK8?

No. EP3 and FD2 wheels are drilled 5x114.3 for M12 hardware, while the FK8 uses 5x120 with M14 studs.
