Cars That Changed Bolt Pattern Between Generations

Most owners assume a newer version of their car takes the same wheels. Often it does not. In our fitment database, 212 of 2,895 model families used more than one bolt pattern over their production years. Below are the best-known switches, with the generation where the change happened.

Each model name links to its year-by-year bolt pattern table. Patterns and centre bores in our database are checked against at least two independent references.

Why manufacturers change bolt pattern

  • New platform. Most switches arrive with a new shared platform, for example BMW's move to 5x112 across the range or Toyota's new six-lug frame for its large trucks and SUVs.
  • Bigger brakes and heavier cars. Electric and hybrid models are heavier, and a larger or stronger pattern spreads the load, as with the electric Porsche Macan moving to 5x130.
  • Group parts sharing. Brands inside one group converge on one pattern, such as Rolls-Royce following BMW or Bentley following Porsche.

Where new models are heading

Across our 2024-onward records, 5x114.3 and 5x112 together cover 48.1%, up from about 40% across all years. 5x108 has grown fastest, from 8.0% of all records to 12.7% of 2024-onward records, mostly because of new Chery and Geely group models. Four-lug patterns have fallen to 7.9% of 2020s records. Full counts are on our bolt pattern statistics page.

Will my old wheels fit the new model?

Only if three things match: the bolt pattern, a centre bore at least as large as the new hub (with a hub ring if larger), and an offset and width that clear the new brakes and fenders. Check both cars in the fitment guide, then compare the two wheel positions with the offset and backspacing calculator. Re-drilling a wheel for a different pattern is not safe; if the pattern changed, you need wheels made for the new hub. For popular pairs we have done the comparison for you: see our wheel swap checks.

FAQ

Did BMW change its bolt pattern?

Yes. BMW moved from 5x120 to 5x112 model by model, starting with the 7 Series (G11) in our records and finishing with the M2 (G87) in 2023. Wheels from the earlier generations do not bolt on.

Do new Toyota Tundra wheels fit the old Tundra?

No. The Tundra changed from 5x150 to 6x139.7 for 2022, so wheels from 2007 to 2021 trucks do not fit the new truck and the reverse.

Can I re-drill wheels for a new bolt pattern?

It is not safe. Re-drilling weakens the mounting face and leaves overlapping holes. Choose wheels made for the new pattern.
