BMW 5 Series Wheel Specs by Generation: Bolt Pattern, Center Bore & Offset for E28 to G60 (1981–2026)

The BMW 5 Series wheel specs change twice across seven generations. Every car from the E28 (1981) to the F10 (2009–2017) uses a 5x120 bolt pattern, and the G30 (2016) and G60 (2023) use 5x112. The center bore is 72.6 mm on the E28, E34, E60 and F10, a wider 74.1 mm on the E39, and 66.6 mm on the G30 and G60. On the common factory sizes, the offset stays between ET20 and ET30 for every generation.
This guide helps you match a wheel to a chassis code, check which wheels swap between generations, and turn the factory numbers into millimetres. The data was checked on 13 October 2026 against two independent fitment databases, and it covers base trims. M Sport and M cars use other sizes, so always compare with the wheel that is on your car.
Key facts: BMW 5 Series wheel specs at a glance
Seven generations share just two bolt patterns and three center bores, so most of the confusion comes from two details: the bolt pattern and the center bore.
- Bolt pattern: every BMW 5 Series from the E28 to the F10 uses 5x120. The G30 and G60 use 5x112, so F10 wheels do not bolt onto a G30. Sources: Wheel-Size.com and avtoreference.com.
- Center bore: the E39 (1995–2004) is the only 5 Series with a 74.1 mm bore. The E28, E34, E60 and F10 use 72.6 mm, and the G30 and G60 use 66.6 mm. Sources: avtoreference.com and a published wheel-maker bolt pattern and center-bore guide.
- Factory offset: the common base sizes run from ET20 on the E39 and E60 to ET30 on the F10, with ET27 and ET30 on the G30 and ET23 and ET29 on the G60. Sources: Wheel-Size.com and avtoreference.com.

Which BMW 5 Series generations share a bolt pattern?
Five generations share 5x120, and the two newest share 5x112, so a wheel drilled for one family never fits the other. Our 5x120 bolt pattern page and 5x112 bolt pattern page list other cars that use the same pattern.
5x120: E28 to F10
The 5x120 cars cover almost four decades, from the E28 to the last F10 built in 2017. They also share the 5x120 pattern with the E90-series 3 Series. The bore and the bolts are what you need to check next.

5x112: G30 and G60
BMW moved the 5 Series to 5x112 with the G30 in 2016 and kept it for the G60 in 2023. Both generations also use a smaller 66.6 mm bore, so any aftermarket wheel with the older 72.6 mm bore needs a 72.6 to 66.6 mm hub ring on these cars. Wheels for these generations are listed on the G30 model page and the G60 model page.

Why the E39 center bore is different
The E39 is the only 5 Series with a 74.1 mm center bore, while the E28, E34, E60 and F10 all use 72.6 mm. The 1.5 mm difference decides which wheels swap, because a wheel can only slide over a hub that is the same size or smaller than its bore. Hub rings close the gap when the wheel bore is larger than the hub.
| Swap | Bolt pattern | Center bore fit | Result |
|---|---|---|---|
| E39 wheel on E60 | 5x120 on both | 74.1 mm bore on a 72.6 mm hub | Fits with 74.1 to 72.6 mm hub rings |
| E39 wheel on F10 | 5x120 on both | 74.1 mm bore on a 72.6 mm hub | Needs the same rings; also confirm the lug bolt thread and seat |
| E60 or F10 wheel on E39 | 5x120 on both | 72.6 mm bore on a 74.1 mm hub | Does not fit: the bore is smaller than the hub |
| E60 wheel on F10 | 5x120 on both | 72.6 mm on both | Bore matches; confirm the lug bolt thread and seat |
| F10 wheel on G30 | 5x120 vs 5x112 | Not relevant | Does not bolt on |
| G30 wheel on G60 | 5x112 on both | 66.6 mm on both | Bore matches; check offset and brake clearance |
Treat this table as a first filter, not a guarantee. Brake size, wheel offset and the lug bolt thread and seat still decide whether a used wheel really fits. Our forged wheel fitment verification checklist walks through those checks one by one.
BMW 5 Series wheel offset by generation
Factory offsets are close across the family, but the width changes from 7 to 8.5 inches, so the position of the wheel in the arch changes more than the ET numbers suggest. The table converts each common factory size into approximate backspacing, calculated as half the rim width plus the offset. It ignores the flange, so treat it as a comparison tool.
| Generation | Wheel size | Offset | Approx. backspacing |
|---|---|---|---|
| E39 | 7x15 | ET20 | 108.9 mm (4.29 in) |
| E39 front | 8x17 | ET20 | 121.6 mm (4.79 in) |
| E39 rear | 9x17 | ET26 | 140.3 mm (5.52 in) |
| E60 | 7x16 | ET20 | 108.9 mm (4.29 in) |
| E60 | 7.5x17 | ET20 | 115.3 mm (4.54 in) |
| F10 | 8x17 | ET30 | 131.6 mm (5.18 in) |
| G30 | 7.5x17 | ET27 | 122.3 mm (4.81 in) |
| G30 | 8x18 | ET30 | 131.6 mm (5.18 in) |
| G60 | 7.5x18 | ET23 | 118.3 mm (4.66 in) |
| G60 | 8.5x19 | ET29 | 137.0 mm (5.39 in) |
Two comparisons show why swapping between generations needs care. An E39 front wheel of 8x17 ET20 and an F10 wheel of 8x17 ET30 have the same width, but the E39 wheel's outer lip sits 10 mm further out from the hub face. The G60's 8.5x19 ET29 puts its outer lip about 7 mm further out than the F10's 8x17 ET30, and its inner edge moves in by about 5 mm. Use the offset, backspacing and tire diameter calculator to test any size before you order.

M cars follow different rules. For the M5 and the other M models, read our BMW M bolt pattern guide, and for a smaller 5x120 car with the same hub as the E60 and F10, see the 135i wheel offset guide.
Choosing forged wheels for your 5 Series
A forged wheel is machined to your chassis, so the right order starts with the chassis code, the factory wheel size and the offset you want. Each ANKUSI wheel is drilled for your exact bolt pattern, and its center bore is cut to match your hub, so you do not need hub rings for a 5x120 or 5x112 car. Send those three numbers on the contact page and we will confirm the setup.
For an E34 or E39, a chrome 5-hole dish forged wheel gives a classic look. On an E60 or F10, a bronze Y-spoke forged wheel brings modern styling. For the G30 and G60, a bright silver 5 Y-spoke concave forged wheel or a black chrome cross-spoke mesh forged wheel suits the wider factory sizes.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the bolt pattern on a BMW 5 Series?
Every BMW 5 Series from the E28 (1981) to the F10 (2009-2017) uses a 5x120 bolt pattern. The G30 (2016) and the G60 (2023) use 5x112, so wheels from the two families do not swap.
What is the center bore of a BMW 5 Series?
The E28, E34, E60 and F10 use a 72.6 mm center bore. The E39 uses 74.1 mm, and the G30 and G60 use 66.6 mm.
Do E39 wheels fit an E60?
Both are 5x120 cars. An E39 wheel has a 74.1 mm bore and the E60 hub is 72.6 mm, so the wheel fits with 74.1 to 72.6 mm hub rings. An E60 wheel will not fit an E39, because its 72.6 mm bore is smaller than the 74.1 mm E39 hub. Check offset and brake clearance before you buy.
Do F10 wheels fit a G30?
No. The F10 uses 5x120 and the G30 uses 5x112, so the bolt holes do not line up. The G30 also has a smaller 66.6 mm hub.
What offset does a BMW 5 Series use?
Common base sizes use ET20 on the E39 and E60, ET30 on the F10, ET27 or ET30 on the G30, and ET23 or ET29 on the G60. Trims and markets differ, so compare with the wheel on your car.
