The Mustang drag wheel sizes that work on an S550 (2015–2023) and S650 (2024+) are an 18x5 or 18x6 front runner with negative offset, and a 17x10, 17x10.5 or 18x10 rear with roughly 7.5 inches of backspacing. Both generations share the same 5x114.3 bolt pattern, 70.5 mm center bore and M14x1.5 studs, so the wheel sizes carry over.

What changes between cars is brake clearance: a GT with Performance Pack Brembo calipers needs an 18-inch minimum, a GT350 needs 19 inches, and a 15-inch rear only fits after a drag brake conversion.

This guide covers the published sizes, the offset-to-backspacing math behind them, the tire pairings that owners actually run, and the brake limits for each trim. It follows the setup logic in our track and drag wheel setup guide, applied specifically to the Mustang drag pack.

What are the standard Mustang drag wheel sizes?

The standard Mustang drag wheel sizes are an 18x5 front at about -12 mm offset and a 17x10 rear at +50 to +54 mm offset on a 305/45R17 drag radial. Owners who want more sidewall run a 17x10.5 with a 315/50R17, and cars with Brembo brakes use an 18x10 rear instead.

Every size in this table is a 5x114.3 wheel. You can see the full bolt pattern family, including the other cars that share it, on our 5x114.3 wheel size page. It is also the most common 5-lug pattern in our fitment dataset, at 27.0% of five-lug entries; the full count is in the bolt pattern statistics.

S550 Mustang drag wheel sizes (2015–2023)

S550 Mustang drag wheel sizes are the easier of the two generations to pin down because the drag market has had a decade to settle on sizes. The factory specs from our 2015 Mustang GT fitment page are 5x114.3, 70.5 mm center bore and 19x8.5 front / 19x9 rear wheels on the GT.

The same bolt pattern and bore apply to the whole generation, which is why the 2015 to 2023 drag wheel sizes are interchangeable.

Rear: a 17x10 with +50 mm offset gives 7.5 inches of backspacing and clears the stock rear calipers on GT, EcoBoost and V6 cars with no spacer. The 305/45R17 drag radial on this wheel is 27.8 inches tall, close to the 19-inch factory tire, so the speedometer and traction control stay happy.

A 17x10.5 at +48 mm (7.63 in backspacing) with a 315/50R17 works too, but the 2018 GT owner who documented it on the Mustang6G forum needed drag springs plus a 3/8-inch spring spacer to stop the taller tire rubbing.

Front: an 18x5 at -12 mm is the standard S550 front runner. It was designed to clear the Performance Pack Brembo front brakes on a GT. It does not clear GT350 brakes, and the 17x10 rear does not fit the 2015–2019 GT350 either, so Shelby owners should read the brake section below before ordering.

Lug hardware stays factory: M14x1.5 studs torqued to 150 lb-ft. Our Ford Mustang bolt pattern by year page lists the hub data for every S550 trim.

S650 Mustang drag wheel sizes (2024+)

S650 Mustang drag wheel sizes are the same as the S550 sizes because the car keeps 5x114.3, a 70.5 mm bore and M14x1.5 studs. Our 2024 Mustang GT fitment page shows the factory 19x8.5 front and 19x9 rear. The difference is that more S650 GTs leave the factory with the Performance Pack and its Brembo calipers, which pushes most owners to an 18-inch rear.

Two documented S650 drag packs: an 18x9 +35 front with 18x10 +42 rear on 255/45R18 and 295/45R18 tires for a drive-to-the-track car, and a full skinny setup with an 18x6 -20 Belak-style front on a 28x6-18 front runner and an 18x10 +32 rear on a 305/45R18. The second one was confirmed to clear Brembo brakes with no spacers.

Keep the front and rear tire heights within about 3 percent of each other. The S650 ABS and traction control read the wheel speed difference, and a 305/45R18 rear (28.8 in) with a 28x6-18 front (28.0 in) sits inside that window. A 17-inch rear with a 315/50R17 (29.4 in) under a stock 19-inch front tire can trip the system.

Which Mustang brakes limit the minimum drag wheel diameter?

Brake clearance, not fender clearance, decides the smallest Mustang drag wheel sizes you can run. Published fitment guides agree on the following minimums with factory brakes.

TrimFront brakesMinimum front wheelMinimum rear wheel
GT / EcoBoost without Performance PackStandard calipers17 in (some) / 18 in17 in
GT with Performance Pack (S550 and S650), Dark HorseBrembo 4 or 6 piston18 in (some) / 19 in18 in

If you want a 15-inch rear on an S550 for the widest slick choice, the factory rear caliper has to go. Drag brake kits for the S550 rear knuckle use a smaller caliper and an 11.6-inch rotor so that a 15x10 double-beadlock clears. That conversion is a race-only change and should be done before the wheels are ordered, because the wheel barrel profile has to match the new caliper.

Offset to backspacing: the numbers behind the sizes

Drag wheel listings mix offset (mm) and backspacing (inches), and the two describe the same thing from different sides. Backspacing is the distance from the mounting pad to the inboard bead lip. For a wheel of nominal width W and offset ET, backspacing in inches is (W + 1) / 2 + ET / 25.4, because the bead flanges add about an inch to the nominal width.

If you are measuring an existing wheel or running 15-inch drag sizes, see our drag wheel backspacing guide for the measuring method and the backspacing-to-offset conversion.

We ran the common Mustang drag wheel sizes through that formula and checked the results against the manufacturers' published backspacing.

18x6 front-20 mm2.71 in (69 mm)Not published

18x10 rear+32 mm6.76 in (172 mm)Not published
18x10 rear+42 mm7.15 in (182 mm)Not published

The two published figures land within 0.03 inches of the calculation, so you can trust the formula when a listing only gives one of the two numbers. Our offset and backspacing calculator does the same math and adds tire diameter.

The practical reading of the table for Mustang drag wheel sizes: on an S550 or S650 rear, anything from 7.5 to 7.65 inches of backspacing on a 10 to 10.5 inch wheel tucks a 305 or 315 tire inside the fender with the factory inner clearance. Less backspacing pushes the tire outward and the sidewall into the fender lip, which is why the 18x10 +32 example is paired with the narrower 18-inch sidewall.

Beadlocks, rules and the 2026 NHRA change

A beadlock ring clamps the tire bead to the wheel so you can run low pressure on a drag radial or slick without spinning the tire on the rim. Our beadlock drag wheels guide covers the power and pressure thresholds where they become worthwhile. For the Mustang sizes above, the 17x10 and 18x10 rears are offered in single and double-beadlock forms.

Rule-wise, NHRA requires wheels certified to SFI spec 15.1, 15.3 or 15.4 in the quicker classes, and the 2025 rulebook amendment allows SFI 15.3 double-beadlock rear wheels up to 16x18 from January 2026, with no tire liner on an 18-inch-wide wheel.

A street-driven S550 running a 305/45R17 does not need any of that, but if your Mustang is heading toward the 8-second range, buy the wheel to the spec your class requires rather than upgrading later.

Forged drag wheels we build in these sizes

Every wheel in our Drag Racing category is forged from 6061-T6 billet and machined to order, so the 7.5-inch backspacing for an S550 rear or the -12 mm offset for an 18x5 front is set at the CNC stage rather than fixed by a catalog, which matters for the Mustang drag wheel sizes that no catalog lists, such as a GT350 or GT500 rear.

For a polished look on a Mustang drag pack, the polished 5-star beadlock drag wheel with black ring is a Weld Racing-style design in 5x114.3. The gloss black 5-star beadlock wheel with red ring is a Belak-style option in the same bolt pattern.

For a black-and-milled front and rear set, the black milled 5 split-spoke beadlock drag wheel uses a Weld Racing-style split-spoke face that keeps the barrel open around a Brembo caliper. All of these are built one set at a time with a 20 to 25 working day lead time, from $220 per wheel, and ship with the center bore machined to 70.5 mm for a hub-centric Mustang fit.

Common mistakes with Mustang drag wheel sizes

Ordering the rear first and the front later is the most common error with Mustang drag wheel sizes. Match the tire heights front to rear before buying anything, or the traction control will intervene on the S650 and the speedometer will drift on the S550.

Assuming a Performance Pack GT takes 17-inch wheels. The Brembo calipers need 18 inches at the rear and, on most wheels, 19 inches at the front. Check the brake table above against the trim on your door jamb.

Reading offset without the width. A +50 offset on a 10-inch wheel and a +50 on a 10.5-inch wheel differ by a quarter inch of backspacing, enough to move a 315 tire from clear to rubbing on a lowered car.

Mixing 15-inch rears with factory brakes. On an S550 the 15x10 only fits after a drag brake conversion; on an S650 no 15-inch fitment has been published.

FAQ

What size drag wheels fit a 2018 Mustang GT?

An 18x5 -12 front and a 17x10 +50 to +54 rear on a 305/45R17 drag radial are the standard 2018 Mustang drag wheel sizes. With the Performance Pack, the 18x5 front still clears the Brembo calipers; the 17x10 rear clears the stock rear brakes.

Do S550 drag wheels fit the 2024 S650 Mustang?

Yes. Both generations use 5x114.3, a 70.5 mm center bore and M14x1.5 studs. The 17-inch rear only fits an S650 without the Performance Pack; Brembo-equipped cars need an 18x10 rear.

What backspacing does a 17x10 Mustang drag wheel need?

About 7.5 inches. A +50 mm offset gives 7.47 inches and a +54 mm offset gives 7.63 inches, both of which tuck a 305/45R17 inside the S550 rear fender without spacers.

Can I run 15-inch drag wheels on a Mustang GT?

Only on the rear, and only after a rear drag brake conversion that replaces the factory caliper with a smaller unit on an 11.6-inch rotor. With factory brakes, 17 inches is the S550 minimum and 18 inches is the Brembo minimum.

Will drag wheels fit a Shelby GT350 or GT500?

The GT350 needs a 19-inch front, and the common 17x10 drag rear is listed as not fitting the 2015–2019 GT350. The 2020–2022 GT500 needs 20-inch wheels front and rear with its factory brakes. Both call for a custom barrel and backspacing rather than an off-the-shelf drag pack.

Which tire goes with an 18x5 front runner?

A 28x6-18 front runner is the usual pairing. At 28 inches tall it stays within 3 percent of a 305/45R18 or 305/45R17 rear, which keeps ABS and traction control calibrated.

Before you settle on a 17x10, check your exact tire in our drag radial wheel width chart: a 305/45R17 is measured on a 10-inch rim, while a 315/35R17 wants 10.5 to 12.5 inches.
